Welcome to Class 1!

Welcome to Spring term 1! This term we have adventurous fun planned! We are going to learning about and going to be inspired by Christopher Columbus and his discoveries.

We begin the term by exploring a talk 4 writing unit on reports, we will be inspired by Tree Giants and then create our own reports on a giant we have created. This looks at spelling small, familiar words correctly and make phonetically plausible attempts at more complex words. Sequencing and linking sentences and extending to organising information into paragraphs. We will continue with our daily phonics lessons and explore spelling and grammar. Please continue reading books and sight words at home to consolidate our learning in class.

In Maths this term, EYFS children will be counting and subitising numbers to 6. They will learn to recognise and describe 2d and 3d shapes.​ Year 1 children will continue with addition and subtracting, building their number knowledge to 40.  They will learn that multiplication is making equal groups. ​Year 2 children will  learn how to measure using a ruler and metre stick. They will also learn how to read, interpret, analyse and construct their own picture graphs.

In Science our unit is on Our topic this term is​ all about Materials.  The children will be given opportunities to identify a range of everyday materials including wood, plastic, glass, metal, water and rock.  They will be able to describe the physical properties of everyday materials including stretchy/stiff, waterproof/ not waterproof, absorbent/ not absorbent, opaque/ transparent.  They will learn how to group everyday materials according to their physical properties. 

Our RE unit this term is all about the religion of Islam. We will look at the features of a Mosque and explore the Qur’an.  The children will look at the Five Pillars of Islam and explain their meaning.  We will explore the main festivals in Islam baking Chapattis and making Mango Lassi. Finally we will compare the religion of Islam to Christianity exploring similarities.

Our topic focus this term is History and we be looking closely at the life and times of Christopher Columbus who was an explorer who journeyed on the sea in his boat called the Pinto.​ He sailed looking for Asia. He discovered the Bahamas.​ ​Christopher Columbus brought lots of things back from his journeys.​ We will compare Christopher Columbus and Queen Victoria and explain why we remember them.

In Art, we will be exploring the medium of sculpture choosing appropriate materials and techniques for a given project . Using starting points including the natural world, man-made objects, fantasy and stories.
