Stoke Bruerne, Class 2
Welcome to Class 2 page for the 2024-2025 academic year!
As always, we're thrilled to have your children back in our class for the new year; ready to create new memories and embark on another year of learning and growth. We have so many exciting plans for this term, and we can't wait to share them with you!
Our class newsletter, which you can find below, contains all the details about what we will be learning this term. We encourage you to take a look at it to stay informed about our topics and the children's learning. We have also added some of the curriculum highlights for this term below as well:
Maths
In Year 3, pupils will spend an extended period exploring and working with fractions. They will be exploring fractions in greater depth than in the previous curriculum, so it is important to devote more time to this topic. Pupils will begin the chapter by counting in tenths and then understanding fractions as division. Pupils will move on to finding fractions of whole numbers as part of a set and looking at sharing 1 and more than 1. Pupils will explore equivalent fractions and look at simplifying fractions before comparing fractions with different denominators. Towards the end of the chapter, pupils will be adding and subtracting fractions.
In the following chapter, pupils will be exploring angles using mathematical vocabulary and investigation. They begin by making and finding angles in shapes, then learn how to name certain angles, specifically right angles, acute angles and obtuse angles. They compare angles to one another and then describe turns using both angles and fractions.
In Year 4, pupils will be completing the final units of the year, beginning with Geometry, wherein they will recognise what an angle is, be able to define the types of angle in a shape using the correct terminology (acute, obtuse, right angle, interior/exterior angle), as well as be able to measure and estimate angles using a protractor (up to 180 degrees). To further their shape knowledge, pupils will also explore the properties of 2D shapes through concepts such as parallel and non-parallel lines, symmetry, equal sides and equal angles.
Upon completing this topic, pupils will learn how to describe the positions of objects and figures. They will learn how to describe positions on grids using coordinates. They will be introduced to the x and y axis', and build an understanding of how coordinates are written. They will learn how to translate shapes using the terms 'left', 'right', 'upwards' and 'downwards', and will use coordinates to describe a figure following a translation.
English
In English this term, we will be looking at list poetry. This involves exploring a beautiful poem called ‘Where do you get your ideas from?’ by Sue Hardy-Dawson. In this unit, children will be looking at creating imaginative and dream-like imagery, working on building a sense of rhythm in writing and exploring metaphor and simile.
Science
This term in Science, we will be exploring the topic of 'Plants and Plant Reproduction'. To begin, pupils will identify the growth and survival needs of a plant and describe the relationship between structure and function in plants. Furthermore, pupils will investigate how water is transported in plants and explore the role of flowers in the life and reproductive cycle of a flowering plant. By the end of the unit, pupils will have also explored the various methods of seed dispersal and apply their knowledge of plant life and growth through scientific enquiry.
Our Foundation Subjects:
In History, we are learning about the Anglo-Saxons and Scots. We will be exploring our understanding of the historical period between 410 AD and 1066 AD. Pupils will recognise who the Anglo-Saxons were and where they originated from, including learning some of the reasons for their migration to Britain. We will explore how Britain changed under Anglo-Saxon rule, such as the establishment of Kingdoms, the reintroduction of Christianity to Britain due to figures like St Augustine, and the Viking invasion of Lindisfarne as well as the subsequent response to this invasion. Additionally, children will examine the theme of leadership in Anglo-Saxon Britain, looking at some of the claimants to the throne, including key historical figures like Alfred the Great.
In RE this term we will be thinking about the theological question of 'What kind of world did Jesus want?' We will be thinking carefully about the Gospel, and the many teachings of Jesus on the subject of humanity and morality. Children will explore different religious attitudes towards creation, morality, individual choice and free will as well as look at some Biblical evidence, allowing children to find their own meaning through Jesus' teachings.
In Art and Design this term, we will be focusing on teaching pupils how to transform 2D card shapes into three-dimensional structures and sculptures. The children will explore abstract shapes and space, develop skills in constructing 3D objects, and understand the difference between 2D and 3D art.
In addition, please be aware that in the Summer Term, our PE. Days for Class 2 are now on a Wednesday each week. We will be developing our physical fitness, movement and motor skills in preparation for Sports Day this June. Please ensure you are packing suitable P.E. kit (i.e., trainers, shorts, etc.)
Once again, we want to express our gratitude for your continued support. The partnership between home and school is crucial for your child's success, and we truly appreciate your involvement in their education journey.
Should you ever have any questions or concerns throughout the year, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. We believe in open communication and working together to ensure the best experience for our children.
Let's make this academic year a memorable and enriching one for Class 2! Thank you for entrusting us with the privilege of teaching your children.
Warmest regards from us all in Class 2,
Mr. J Griffiths and Miss. L Fonseca
